The City has approximately 650 signalized intersections
and 34 flashing beacons that are maintained by the
Traffic Signal Shop. Staff is on duty 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week to handle any Traffic Signal emergency
that might arise.
The Signal Shop has installed LED (light emitting
diodes) displays in most of the red sections of the
signals throughout the city. The amber, green and
pedestrian displays are being changed out at a rate
of 12% per year. A fully converted intersection will
use less than half the energy of incandescent lamps
and last 8 times longer providing a great savings
to the city.
The Traffic Signal Shop works with Traffic Engineering
to maintain a Traffic Operation Center (TOC) which
will have about 500 signalized intersections that
can be monitored and coordinated from the TOC and/or
the Signal Shop. These Signals communicate with a
master controller to provide efficient progression
of traffic especially in the downtown grid.
For Traffic Signal assistance, dial 311, or 264-5011 outside of Sacramento.
