City workers kick off 2008 safety campaign with unveiling of memorial bench for fellow worker

City workers are kicking off the third year of “Work Zone Safety Awareness Month,” Wednesday, April 2, with the unveililng of a bench in memory of Tony Pontliana, who died of injuries he sustained while flagging traffic in July 2004.
The campaign is aimed at increasing driver awareness of work zones, slowing traffic and preventing vehicle accidents at City construction sites.
The campaign features the annual display of special “Pleaze Slow Down” signage at work sites, as well as a new billboard off Business 80 East at Cal Expo and a [radio public service announcement,] and increased law enforcement at construction sites in the City’s right-of-way.
