Why Are Stop Signs Posted?
Stop signs are posted to reduce collisions.
At intersections, stop signs show which motorist
has the right of way and ensure that traffic flows
smoothly and predictably. Stop signs may also be
used to evenly distribute vehicles entering an
intersection.
What Are The Drawbacks Of Stop Signs?
Recognizing that neighborhood speeding is a
citywide problem, the city has adopted a special
policy to control speeding through the placement
of stop signs. However, overuse of stop signs may
actually reverse the benefits. Studies have shown
that motorists may ignore stop signs or increase
speed between controlled areas if the stop signs
are poorly placed.
How Are Stop Signs Funded?
Every year, the Sacramento City Council allocates
funding for road improvements such as stop signs.
The cost of studying, manufacturing and installing
stop signs is included in the Department of Public
Works' operating budget.
Who Decides Where Stop Signs Are Placed?
City traffic engineers evaluate locations where
stop signs may be needed and follow state and federal
guidelines to ensure proper placement. The following
factors are studied:
- collision history
- pedestrian and bicycle traffic
- amount of traffic typically on the street
- speed of traffic
- visibility at the intersection
- type of area (residential, commercial, offices,
recreational, etc.)
- site measurements and the distance between
the proposed sign from other stop signs or traffic
signal.
After considering these elements at each location,
traffic engineers determine if a stop sign is warranted.
