Neighborhood Preservation Transportation Plan (NPTP) approved

Traffic Operations Center / Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP) / Neighborhood Preservation Transportation Program (NPTP) / Captain Jerry Program / Traffic Counts / Red Light Running Program / Traffic Calming Devices

(Updated: February 2008)

The City Council approved the following plan recommendations onTuesday, January 29,2008.

On H Street

  • The diverter at H Street and 21st Street remain and be made permanent with a concrete island along with a concrete median on 21st between H and I
  • Allow left turns from H Street to northbound 21st Street
  • Improve signage on eastbound H Street prior to 19th Street to encourage use of southbound 19th Street to continue eastbound

On G Street

  • Relocate the G Street half street closure from 20th Street to 19th Street and make permanent with addition of landscaped island

Other traffic calming measures

  • Four-way stop at F Street and 20th Street
  • Bike lanes on F Street from 16th Street to Alhambra

Rationale for final plan

  • No superior option resulted from traffic analysis
  • No significant traffic volume increases within the neighborhood with either option analyzed relative to current traffic volumes
  • Better access to destinations, more east-west travel options, and eliminates frustration associated with the “forced loop”.
  • Consistent with the purpose of the NPTP project, which is to slow the speed of traffic on midtown residential streets; maintain good access to midtown merchants and downtown commerce; and improve pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle safety.
