We’re coming to your neighborhood
Urban Forestry’s Neighborhood Pruning Program protects one of our City’s most coveted assets – its 100,000 public trees. The program concentrates crews on individual neighborhoods to enhance the health and safety of every tree on a lot-by-lot, tree-by-tree basis. Crews typically focus on basic pruning tasks such as removing any dead or dying branches, reducing end weight, improving structure and elevating tree crowns to allow clearance over sidewalks and streets. The crews move from neighborhood to neighborhood, with the goal of pruning the entire City tree population at least once every 10 years. See annual schedule.
Special requests for urgent matters are responded to by a separate crew.
What trees do City crews prune? City crews will prune street trees that are located in the right-of-way, such as in planter strips between the curb and sidewalk. In a few areas, the right-of-way extends beyond that and into front yards. Where front yard trees are in the right-of-way, they will be also be pruned.
How will I know when neighborhood trees will be pruned and what can I expect? Urban Forestry staff will notify residents several days in advance of the scheduled work. Typically, door hangers are left at each property where work is expected to occur. In addition, staff will also post parking restrictions in advance in order to allow crews to move to each tree efficiently and to minimize possible damage to parked vehicles. Parking restrictions are usually limited to a single day. Our crews, which may be contract employees or City employees, drive marked vehicles with permanent or magnetic decals so you will know who we are.
