Tree Maintenance:

These are routine maintenance activities required to preserve the safety, sustainability, and health of the public urban forest.  Services include:

  • Pruning
  • Traffic sign or street light clearance
  • Young tree maintenance to ensure proper structure

All City tree pruning follows two industry standards for pruning:

  • American National Standards Institute A-300 Pruning Standards
  • International Society of Arboriculture – Best Management Practices for Tree Pruning.

Tree Removal:

Street trees are protected by Title 12, Chapter 12.56 of the City Code. Trees are only removed for the following causes:

  • Diseased, dying, or dead
  • Hazard (structurally unsound and dangerous)
  • Obstructing a permitted improvement such that it will be killed or become structurally unsound when the improvement is implemented.

Tree Planting and Replacement:

Tree planting is part of the reforestation efforts of Urban Forestry Service.  Trees are only planted by the City on public property.  Tree replacement is part of the tree removal process and follows the right tree in the right place guiding principal.  Trees are replaced unless there is a utility conflict that prevents tree planting.

Emergency Services:

Urban Forestry Services responds to emergency calls for tree maintenance services related to the right-of-way.  Emergency crews will be dispatched for the following reasons:

  • Hangers – broken limbs hanging in trees that threaten the right-of-way.
  • Down limbs that block the right-of-way.
  • Down trees that block the right-of-way.
  • Split trees that threaten the right-of-way.
  • Public trees with a loose root plate
