The Department of Utilities maintains:

  • 2 water treatment plants (Sacramento River Water Treatment Plant is the first rapid sand filtration plant built west of the Rockies and is still being used today)
  • 2 wastewater treatment plants
  • 1 Combined Sewer System (one of only two in California)
  • 60 Wells
  • 160 Pump Stations
  • 3,988 miles of pipe
  • 50,914 drain inlets
  • 13 reservoirs
  • 16,000 fire hydrants
  • 2 closed landfills

Each year, the City of Sacramento Department of Utilities:

  • Serves more than 480,000 customers
  • Delivers more than 38 billion gallons of drinking water to customers
  • Pumps more than 37 billion gallons of wastewater (sewage, combined sewage and stormwater)
  • Collects more than 120,000 tons of garbage
  • Collects more than 122,000 tons of materials that are recycled, composted or otherwise diverted from landfills
  • Maintains more than 2,000 miles of water and sewer pipes
