Backyard Composting

Backyard Composting Seminars:

Program Description
Backyard composting allows you to recycle your yard clippings and fruit and vegetable scraps into a valuable soil amendment right in your own yard. It is a great way to save money, reduce the amount of waste that is disposed, and improve the quality of your soil.

Seminar Location:
Southside Park Community Garden
5th Street near "W" Street Downtown

Dates and Time:
Saturdays from 8:00-10am on the following dates
(there will be five-20 minute seminars during this time frame)

March 8 - Bonus Topic-Adding green manure/cover crops to garden
April 12 - Bonus Topic-Planting summer vegetables
May 10 - Bonus Topic-Planting summer vegetables
September 13 - Bonus Topic-Planting winter vegetables
October 4 - Bonus Topic-Planting cover crops

No Advance Registration Required

City of Sacramento Residents: biostack Compost Bin available for $65.00 (Retails for $110-$139) Proof of residency required. Limit one per household.

At the seminar you will learn:

  • What materials you should and should not compost
  • Getting the right balance of food, air and moisture
  • Maintaining your compost pile
  • Vermicomposting (composting with worms)

The Backyard Composting Seminars are taught in partnership with the City of Sacramento, Department of Parks and Recreation Community Garden Program.
