The City operates a periodic collection program for bulky waste.
Single family residences are notified of a day on which they may
place items such as appliances, carpeting, couches, wood debris,
and other large items for City collection. Special features of
this program include:
- Fifty percent of the material
collected is recycled.
- Refrigerators and other appliances
containing chloroflourocarbons
(CFCs) are separately collected.
The CFCs are recovered and the
compressors are removed. In this
way, the City prevents CFC emissions
which contribute to depletion of
the ozone layer. The oil from compressors
is recycled. The refrigerators
are then recycled as scrap metal.
