Recycle
Recycling during the holiday season only increases by about 1 percent, but much of our holiday waste is recyclable or reusable!
Some items you can recycle include:
- Wrapping paper (not including foil wrapping paper)
- Greeting cards
- Catalogs
- Bottles (glass and plastic beverage containers)
- Cans (aluminum, beverage, tin, steel)
- Jars (glass and plastic)
- Christmas trees
Reduce
A toy or sweater might last a season or a year before being thrown out or donated for reuse, but a memory lasts a lifetime! Consider giving gifts that don't require wrapping such as an experience or donation.
If you do use wrapping paper, buy the kind with recycled content and avoid materials that are not recyclable such as foil or metallic papers. If you are compelled to buy an item for someone, consider those with less packaging that may wind up in landfills.
Reuse
Reuse gift bags, gift tags, wrapping, tissue paper, boxes, ribbons or bows from last year. Remember to collect them when unwrapping gifts to use them again next year. Not only will you help the environment but you’ll save money, too!
Tip: Keep a basket or box nearby to collect wrapping supplies when gifts are opened.
