Homeowner Stories

In most cases, a full retrofit is a simple construction process. Crews will do their best to minimize inconveniences; however, as with any construction project, noise, dust and machinery are expected. Following are stories and comments from residents who have had water meters installed in their neighborhood and are preparing for the transition to a metered rate.

Gary's Story

Pocket
Meter installed June 2010

Gary

"The guys were great. I have no complaints.

"I knew meters were coming. The City left a door hanger, and I had plenty of notice. The crew was in my neighborhood for about a week. They were neat and cleaned up after themselves on a daily basis. They cut into the grass to connect the meter from the sidewalk to the house's water service line. They replaced the grass, and I kept watering it, but it wasn't taking. So, the crew let me have another piece of grass.

"I don't understand the big deal about water meters. You use it you pay for it. If you don't use it, you're not going to pay."

"The crew was very friendly and courteous. I watched them install the meter, and they performed the work quickly and thoroughly. There was very little for me to sweep up.

"I'm conscious about water use, because it's a non-renewable resource."

Meter installed August 2009

Patricia

Patricia Clark is District Director for Councilmember Robbie Waters and a Pocket resident. Her water meter was installed in August 2009. Soon after, she began receiving "comparative" data
on her utility bill, demonstrating how her current flat rate compares to what she would have paid on a metered rate.

Read her series of e-mails to constituents that shares her personal meter story and answers the question: Is she likely to pay more or less on a metered rate?

Robert's Story

Meter
installed June 2010

Robert

"These guys [the crew] are professionals. They really know what they're doing. The only small issue I had was that the crew started too early one morning. When I called the contractor, a supervisor came to speak with me immediately. He was nice and very polite. After that, I didn't even know the crew was there. "
