Animal Care Volunteer Orientation - Volunteers assist with special events, handling and exercising dogs and cats, pet grooming and bathing, office work, adoption clinics and education. Volunteer orientations are offered the second Wednesday of each month from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm. Juneteenth Celebration at William Land Park - This event will take place Saturday, June 20th and Sunday, June 21st. Volunteers will serve as ambassadors, site image managers, vendor assistants, volunteer booth, childrens area, decorations crew and parking attendants. Family Nights in Oak Park - The Oak Park Community Center located at 3425 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is hosting family nights on June 22nd, August 26th, September 23rd and October 28th from 5-7 pm. Volunteers are needed each event to help with set up, assist with activities, break down and clean up. Volunteers must be at least 16. 16th Annual Meadowview Jazz & Cultural Festival – Volunteers are needed to help with this year’s festival which will be held at Cosumnes River College on Saturday, June 27, 2009. The headliner for this year’s Festival will be “The Summer Storm”. Volunteers will help with hospitality/food, monitoring entrances, assisting in parking lot, and helping with the stage set up and monitoring the stage set-up area. Shifts vary by assignment and are generally between 2-5 hours. Application forms are due back no later than Friday, May 29th, 2009. Longview Oaks Nature Area Invasive Plant Removal - On Saturday July 18th from 9:00 AM – Noon help remove invasive plants from this nature area. Volunteers will meet in the parking lot at the Sacramento Horsemen’s Association 3250 Longview Drive. Volunteers will be removing invasive plant species to promote the growth of native grasses. Teen Olympics – The Oak Park Community Center will host the Teen Olympics on Saturday, July 25th. This s a sports event with wacky relays, dashes, softball throw, and field events. Teens from all the Center’s programs attend this event. Volunteers are needed with set up on Friday, July 24th from 6-8 pm and on Saturday, July 25th from 8 am to 4 pm. Ice Cream Safari - The Sacramento Zoo is looking for volunteers for the Ice Cream Safari to be held on Saturday July 25th 2009. We are looking for volunteers to scoop ice cream, serve sodas, face paint, hand out popsicles, and assist in a number of other areas. There are two shifts: 1st begins at 3:30pm and ends at 6:30pm and 2nd shift from 6:00pm to 9:00pm (the cooler shift of the two). Del Paso Regional Park Equestrian Trail Pick Up - On Saturday, September 12th from 9:00 – Noon help remove trash from the trail. Volunteers will meet in the parking lot of the Sacramento Horsemen’s Association, 3200 Longview Drive, Sacramento, (near Watt Avenue and the Capital City Freeway). Oak Park Annual Community Celebration - Volunteers are also needed to help with planning and carrying out the annual community celebration scheduled for Saturday, October 3rd from 9 am to 5 pm. Volunteers are needed to serve on the planning committee and to work the event helping with set up, running activities, serving food, break down and clean up. Volunteers must be at least 16. Trick or Treat Down Oak Street - The Oak Park Community Center hosts a safe Halloween event on Friday, October 30th for children in the neighborhood. Come help decorate the Center for some spooky activities and hand out treats to the kids. Volunteers are needed from 5 to 8 pm and are encouraged to wear costumes. Volunteers must be at least 16. Sacramento Northern Bike Trail Rose Pruning - On Saturday, November 14th from 9:00AM – Noon help prune the roses along the bike trail. Bring your green thumb, and help prune the old Roses so the new Roses will thrive. Volunteers will receive pruning instruction, so no prior experience is needed, only the willingness to learn. Oak Park Community Center Program Volunteers - Volunteers are needed at the Oak Park Community Center to help with the youth and teen programs after school. Help with activities, events, homework and computer usage. Front desk help is also needed and a great way to learn more about office procedures and gain skills for future employment. Sacramento Historic City Cemetery – Fundraising - Persons with experience raising money for non-profits are encouraged to apply with the Old City Cemetery Committee to work with volunteers with ideas but little experience. Events in the cemetery are generally involved with history or gardening, but new ideas are welcome. Time Required: Flexible Duration: Long or Short Term. Sacramento Historic City Cemetery - Actors - Persons with acting experience and a keen interest in old Sacramento history are needed for special fund-raising events at the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery. Events are generally held in the evening, and actors in period costume do re-enactments of events affecting persons buried in the cemetery. Time Required: 4-5 hours per event. Duration: Short Term. Volun-Teen Program at Fairytale Town - This new program was added to the Volunteer Program this year and is set up to teach teens how to inspire and educate children in the arts, cultural and literary programming all while learning introductory job skills that will make them more prepared to enter the workforce when they are ready. Requirements and details for the program are: volunteers must be between the ages of 13 and 19, must commit to working a minimum of 3 hours a week for 3 months, will be given uniform t-shirts and a dress code that they must follow, learn how to sign-in and out daily, how to track their hours, and will be responsible for turning in a time sheet every 2 weeks, and must attend monthly staff meetings. Art Access Advisory Committee - The Crocker Art Museum is inviting new community members to join the Art Access Advisory Committee. The committee meets every other month and works to advise the staff on how to make the museum more accessible to individuals with learning, emotional, and physical disabilities, to those that don't speak English as their first language, to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities, and to those who may not have the finances to visit the museum, (either as a group or as individuals). Crocker Art Museum Teen Action Team – If you are between the ages of 13 and 17, join a group of your peers to actively create and plan activities for teens at the Crocker Art Museum and on-line as part of the Teen Action Team. Parks Volunteer Program - Volunteers are invited to help with various one day or short-term stewardship activities in city parks, trails, and natural areas. Activities vary by season, and training and tools will be provided, so no prior experience is needed, only the desire to help. Opportunities are available in all neighborhoods, and many activities are great for large groups, families, or youth groups with adult supervisors. Volunteers should wear closed toed shoes and are encouraged to bring a pair of work gloves. Service activities are available weekdays, and on occasional weekends. Re-enactment Volunteers - The Old Sacramento Living History program provides an 1850's Gold Rush life demonstration program the last Sunday in each month from 10 am to 4 pm at Waterfront Park in Old Sacramento. Volunteers are needed to assist with set up of the tents and site, tear-down and general assistance during the time of the program. This is a great opportunity for students to earn service credit. Receptionist - Sacramento Archives and Museum Collection Center is looking for a volunteer to help answer phones, take messages and greet patrons of the archives. Driving Range Pick-up - Staff of the Haggin Oaks Golf Course invite volunteers to help on Tuesday mornings twice a month from 6 am to 9 am with retrieving golf balls from the field at the driving range. Information Technology Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Internship - The Central GIS Unit is offering student internships (unpaid) to assist with the collection, verification, and update of the City's Master Addresses. Internships are currently available for all of 2009 with possible continuation into 2010. Students will gain training and mentorship opportunities to build skills in data collection, field experience, data maintenance, and quality control for GIS data that is used throughout the City. No experience needed, but fundamental knowledge of GIS and ESRI products preferred or enrollment in the GIS certification program a plus. A 10-20 hour commitment per week is required and a regular schedule throughout the internship is preferred. Cover the Kids, Sacramento's Children's Health Initiative - Volunteers are needed on an on-going basis to assist with client follow-up phone calls. The purpose is to help collect data on children who are enrolled in a health program and those who are not. This data will allow the project to assist families by providing them access to various health programs. Volunteers are also needed to assist with various jobs at one-day events to reach families with uninsured children. Parents will be enrolling their children in affordable health coverage programs and learning about health services by attending a short class. Volunteers will assist at these events by facilitating children's activities, childcare, staffing a registration table or an information table, and making copies for families. Sacramento START - (Students Today Achieving Results Tomorrow) Learning Today...Leading Tomorrow. Sacramento START is an after school program and is located on school campuses where 50% or more of the children receive free or reduced lunch. START has volunteer opportunities existing for individuals on a short or long-term basis. Volunteers will be able to work with small groups of children through homework assistance, recreational and enrichment activities. Volunteer assignments include START Pal, Enrichment Specialist, Special Events Assistant, Inspirational Speaker, Homework Helper, Cluster Assistant, Yard Duty Assistant, Site Director Assistant, Reading Buddy, Community Outreach Assistant, and START Office Assistant.
