Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge

Photograph taken August 1937.
Taken from the east (Sacramento County) side of the bridge. The bridge was operated by River Lines - the office is visible at left. The bridge was opened in 1935 and still spans the Sacramento River, connecting Sacramento County and Yolo County. The center span raises to allow river craft passage, moving at one foot per second. When completed, the Tower Bridge was one of the largest lift span bridges in the nation. Locally, the bridge was known as a notorious bottleneck, as vehicle traffic backed up regularly when the 2.3 million pound center span was slowly raised and lowered.
