As of January 1, 2017, the City of Sacramento is requiring all new plan review and permit applications to comply with the 2016 California Building Standards Codes which are based on the International Building and Fire Codes, the Uniform Plumbing and Mechanical Codes, and the National Electrical Code.

All permit applications must comply with the provisions of the above codes as well as Energy Codes, Green Building Code and the applicable City Code amendments.

Staff is working to reduce the number of City of Sacramento code amendments through regular evaluations and updates. During this period City staff will make an effort to work with design professionals to find solutions where existing City Code conflicts with the new California State Codes.

For your convenience, the Building Division prepared a summary of significant changes in the 2016 Building Codes.

New! The 2019 California Building Codes will take effect on January 1, 2020!
