Sacramento Film + Media has been given permission by Dr. Peter Beilenson, Director, Sacramento County Dept. of Health Services to resume filming in Sacramento on June 12 with adherence to the film industry guidelines and with the following restrictions: The number of personnel on location will be limited to 20, all personnel who are not filming will be required to wear masks or other protective equipment, hand sanitizer or hand washing stations will be readily available, social distancing will be implemented whenever possible, the production crew will verify that all personnel are not feeling sick prior to production, will conduct temperature checks, and actors will only remove masks when filming.

The City is undertaking an exciting new role as the film permitting and information center for the City of Sacramento.

For years, these services were skillfully and professionally handled by Visit Sacramento, the capital region’s exceptional visitor’s bureau. Transitioning these Film Office functions within the City government will allow more organic integration between City agencies and a more efficient leveraging of City resources, with the ultimate goal of building on the great production support previously provided by Visit Sacramento.

During this transition, we will strive to maintain the same high-quality permitting and information services as Visit Sacramento.

Sacramento Film Office 5-Year Plan

In 2019 the Convention and Cultural Services Department engaged Metris Arts Consulting along with Rich Moskal (former director of the Chicago Film Office) to assess the current film production environment in Sacramento, analyze the City’s potential, and provide a plan that will help Sacramento position itself as a production destination. This 5-year plan includes a number of strategic goals along with short-, mid-, and long-term actions to help achieve those goals. The Convention and Cultural Services Department’s new Film Office is very excited to execute this plan and to unlock new creative and economic possibilities for the City and the region over the next several years.

Sacramento Film Office 2020-2025 Plan

One of the most historic cities in California, Sacramento boasts an impressive array of landmarks, parks, urban environments, and natural locales including:

The California State Capitol – Neoclassical architecture with historic offices, 40 acres of gardens and memorials, and a history museum.

The Tower Bridge – An iconic vertical lift bridge spanning the Sacramento River and connecting downtown Sacramento and the City of West Sacramento.

Historic Old Sacramento – Commercial center of the California gold rush and western terminus of the Pony Express route along the Sacramento River, Old Sacramento is replete with historic structures, museums, paddle boats, trains, and an underground area where parts of the City were “jacked up” out of flood waters in the 1870s.

Sutter’s Fort Historic Park – An 1840s historic fort/community in midtown Sacramento.

Historic City Cemetery – A 170-year old, 44-acre Victorian cemetery and garden.

Sacramento also boasts a diverse variety of bridges and parks, farms and orchards, Victorian and New England style neighborhoods, lakes and ecosystems, and one of the area’s most striking natural features: the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers.
