Brownfields Program

The City of Sacramento Brownfields Program assists in the redevelopment on sites that may contain environmental contamination.

Brownfields are real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant. The City’s Brownfields Program provides financial and technical assistance for Brownfields revitalization, including grants for environmental assessment, cleanup, and job training.

FUNDING AVAILABILITY

Site Assessment

In July 2009, the City was awarded $400,000 in grant funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The grant will fund activities designed to encourage Brownfields redevelopment in Sacramento. Under the grant, $328,000 has been allocated to conduct site assessments at no cost to the applicant. The funds are used as an opportunity to gain more information about a site's condition, which can directly affect decisions on property acquisition or cleanup strategy.

Revolving Loan Funds

The City's Revolving Loan Funds (RLF) program provides sub-loans to assist in Brownfield related cleanup efforts. With this funding, the City helps to strengthen the marketplace and encourage stakeholders to leverage the resources needed to clean up and redevelop brownfields. When loans are repaid, the loan amount is returned into the fund and re-lent to other borrowers, providing an ongoing source of capital within a community.
