Governor Jerry Brown Signs Legislation to Help Revitalize Stockton Boulevard and Build Affordable Housing

September 19, 2018

Sacramento— Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed into law SB 481(Pan) to build affordable housing and revitalize Stockton Boulevard.

“I’m proud to have worked with Senator Richard Pan to help revitalized Stockton Boulevard and build much needed affordable housing,” said Councilmember Eric Guerra, whom started discussions with Dr. Richard Pan, State Senator representing the Sacramento region, early in the year to address blight and housing demands in the business corridor. “Our communities deserve better, and we need affordable housing.”

“It was great to see so many groups and individuals come together with a creative solution that both addresses housing needs and fixes a blighted area of our community,” said Dr. Richard Pan. “The vacant lot is a great location for infill affordable housing along a transit corridor, and I was thrilled to be able to work with so many community partners to make it a reality.”

The site of the former San Juan Motel along Stockton Boulevard has been sitting vacant riddled with crime, prostitution and blight since it was set aside for redevelopment nearly a decade ago. SB 481 will address bureaucracy technicalities standing in the way of development along this important transportation corridor.

SB 481 will allow the City and the County of Sacramento to join two parcels of land for the much-needed development of affordable housing along Stockton Boulevard. Sacramento has been hit particularly hard. Median rent in Sacramento rose faster than in any other California metro area in 2017, because of the lack of construction of affordable housing.
