Mayor Steinberg and Supervisor Serna Issue Joint Statement Regarding Opening of Weather Refuge Center

The City and County are opening Southside Park pool house Tuesday night as a ‘weather refuge center’ to provide respite during the continuing storm. This is on top of the recent City and County partnership to expand access to a warming center on Sacramento’s coldest nights. While the warming center pilot was a good initial step to protect our most vulnerable population from the bitter cold, the City and County decided more must be done to provide protection from the elements and inclement weather.

Therefore, the City and County are taking measures to keep the Southside park pool house open as a ‘weather refuge center’ during what is predicted to be the most severe stages of the current storm system. We are in constant pursuit of delivering comprehensive, compassionate and effective services to our homeless population and as such will work together to develop criteria for when to open a weather refuge center moving forward.
