The City of Sacramento offers a variety of American Red Cross aquatics certification courses at Pannell Meadowview and Clunie Pools, and the North Natomas Aquatics Complex. Location varies based on facility availability and is specified in the course description.

Become a City of Sacramento Lifeguard

Now Hiring for Lifeguard and Pool Management positions

The City of Sacramento aquatics team offers competitive wages and the opportunity to earn incentives of up to $600 each summer! Successful applicants will possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or be enrolled in a Red Cross Lifeguard course, and pass a background check, physical examination, and drug test.

LIFEGUARD SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Scholarships are available to applicants interested in joining the Aquatics team. If you meet the course prerequisites, go through the city’s hiring process, and are willing to work at least 4 months as a lifeguard for the City, there are scholarships available to attend our Lifeguard Academy. Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Courses

Price: $185

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course will train and certify participants to be a lifeguard for swimming pools. The Lifeguard certification course includes the following American Red Cross certifications: Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the professional rescuer, valid for 2 years. For 2022, City of Sacramento courses are all a blended learning course format with online education, classroom, and in-water components. American Red Cross requires all Lifeguard certification candidates to complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Online Course prior to the first-class date (details sent after registration). Participants must be at least 15 years old at the time of the course. Attendance is required at all class sessions listed in the course description.

Criteria for certification:

  1. Attend and actively participate in all course sessions.
  2. Complete all eLearning units prior the in-person sessions.

  3. Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.

  4. Demonstrate competency in a required final rescue skill scenarios.

  5. Pass the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid, Lifeguarding, and Administering Emergency Oxygen final written exams with an 80 percent or better.
