MEET Deputy CHIEF Steve Oliveira

Deputy Chief Steve Oliveira moved to Sacramento in 1990 to attend Sacramento State University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. He is also a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum - Senior Management Institute for Police. His parents immigrated from the Azores, Portugal and he speaks Portuguese. His father was a police officer in Portugal before coming to the United States. Steve is married and has two teenage children.
Steve graduated from the Sacramento Police Academy in 1994. He worked as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, and POP Officer. In 2001, he became a detective and had assignments in the Robbery and Homicide Units. He then promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to Patrol, the Canine Unit, and was also a Canine handler. He promoted to Lieutenant in 2013 and had assignments as a Patrol Watch Commander, managing the Internal Affairs Division and Professional Standards Unit and directing the Sacramento Police Academy and Field Training Unit. In 2019, Steve was promoted to Captain and was assigned to lead the North Command. Steve was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2021 and previously oversaw the Office of Operations. He currently serves as the Deputy Chief of the Office of Investigations where he oversees the Major Crimes Division, Investigative Services, the Training Division, Fiscal, and Personnel.
Steve is the recipient of a Distinguished Service Award and a Unit Citation by the department. He was also recognized by Sacramento City Council Resolution, and he received a State of California Senate Certificate of Recognition for his dedicated service to the community.
