**The information provided below is preliminary as the investigation into this incident remains on-going. Some details may change as supplemental information is gathered and additional witnesses are interviewed.**

On April 3, 2022, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Sacramento Police Department officers responded to the sounds of shots fired in the area of 10th Street and K Street. Upon arrival, officers located a large group of individuals as well as multiple gunshot victims. Officers began live-saving measures to multiple victims on scene. Despite these efforts, six victims were pronounced deceased at the scene. Twelve other victims with varying degrees of injuries have also been located.

We are aware of social media video that appears to show an altercation that preceded the shooting. We are currently working to determine what, if any, relation these events have to the shooting. Additional photos and/or videos can be submitted directly to the department at the following link: or by following the attached QR codes:

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the scene and began conducting a comprehensive investigation; gathering evidence, documenting the scene, and contacting involved individuals. During the preliminary processing of the scene, investigators located at least three buildings and three vehicles that had been struck by gunfire. Detectives have located hundreds of items of evidence at the scene, including over 100 expended shell casings, and a stolen handgun which has now been inspected and found to have been converted to a weapon capable of automatic gunfire.

As the investigation progressed, Sacramento Police Department SWAT and detectives served search warrants at three residences in the area. During the execution of the search warrants, at least one handgun was recovered.

Evidence in the case indicates that at least five shooters fired guns during the shooting, and that an exchange of gunfire took place between at least two groups of men. As detectives continue to identify shooters and weapons involved, the number of identified shooters may grow beyond five.

As detectives learn more about the shootings, it is increasingly clear that gang violence is at the center of this tragedy. While we cannot elaborate on the precise gang affiliation of individuals involved, gangs and gang violence are inseparable from the events that drove these shootings.

“This tragedy downtown is a very public example of what families in many of our neighborhoods know too well. The suffering inflicted by gang violence does not limit itself to gang members. It spills over to claim and shatter innocent lives and harm our entire community.”

Investigators have identified 26-year-old Dandrae Martin as a related suspect. On April 4, 2022 Martin was arrested and booked for assault and illegal firearm possession charges.

27-year-old Smiley Martin was located at the scene with serious injuries from gunfire and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Smiley Martin was quickly identified as a person of interest and has remained under the supervision of an officer at the hospital while his treatment continues. Based on information developed during this investigation, Smiley Martin was taken into custody by Sacramento Police Department detectives on April 5, 2022. Once Smiley Martin’s medical care has been completed and he is determined to be fit for incarceration, he will be booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and possession of a machine gun. Smiley Martin is the brother of Dandrae Martin.

Detectives also identified a man who was seen carrying a gun in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. In following up on this information, detectives recovered a handgun and arrested 31-year-old Daviyonne Dawson on charges of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. At this time, Dawson is not charged with crimes directly related to the shootings. Based on the type of firearm recovered, detectives do not believe that this gun was used in the shooting. Detectives are continuing to investigate this crime and identify additional suspects.

Investigators continue to examine evidence, contact witnesses, and interview involved parties to gain a complete understanding of the incident. As these processes occur, different and/or additional charges may apply. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will be reviewing all evidence to determine appropriate charges.
