Bike Lanes on J Street
Over the past two years, the City has been pursuing a ”road diet” for J Street between 41st Street and 56th Street. Reducing the number of travel lanes is one way of calming traffic. In the fall of 2013, the road was resurfaced and the four travel lanes were reduced to three along with curbside parallel parking.
After the re-striping project was completed, bicyclists and bicycle advocates asked if the space given over to parallel parking could be made into bike lanes. In response to this request, City staff has conducted parking surveys to determine how often the parking spaces are being used. The results of this survey indicate that most of the parking provided is not being used, and it would be possible to remove some sections of parking places and install bike lanes with little or no impact.
