What is FOG?

It may seem harmless to pour and scrape your fats, oils, and grease (FOG) down the kitchen drain, but it causes real trouble for your pipes, the sewer – and your bank account!

Common cooking FOG include:

  • Cooking oil
  • Bacon grease
  • Meat fat
  • Lard
  • Shortening
  • Butter
  • Salad dressings

Why is FOG a problem?

For home or property owners, unclogging a household drain can be expensive. For restaurants, keeping FOG out of the sewer system is the lawSewer backups can go into your gutter and flow into storm drains and end up in our waterways causing environmental and health problems.

The City of Sacramento can be fined when these sewer overflows run into local waterways. These costs will make their way back to city residents. By keeping our sewers operating smoothly helps keep Sacramento clean and safe for everybody.
