Local restaurants may request to construct an expanded service area in specific parts of the public right-of-way through the the City of Sacramento Al Fresco Dining Program. A convenient online request form provides engineered layouts, customizable design options, and a streamlined permitting process.

HOW TO request an al fresco dining structure

To initiate a request to build an Al Fresco structure, click on the Al Fresco Request button to complete the Initial Interest Form. This is an interactive online site that will collect information about the business and guide the applicant through multiple design options, estimated construction costs, and potential technical considerations that may need to be reviewed for the proposed site. 

After completing the online Initial Interest Form, a representative will be in contact via email or phone to provide an online link to advance to the formal application process, including permits, and a comprehensive review of the proposed Al Fresco Dining structure and building site.

After the online Initial Interest Form is submitted, please collect the following documents in preparation for the completion of the formal application process:

  • Non-refundable application fee 
  • Copy of City of Sacramento Business Operations Tax Certificate (What is this?)
  • Alcohol Beverage Control license and map, if applicable (How to get an ABC permit)
  • Site Plan (What is this?)
  • Liability Insurance Policy
  • Completed Al Fresco Agreement

Al fresco grant program  

The Al Fresco Grant Program provides financial assistance to City of Sacramento restaurant owners for construction of Al Fresco dining patios. The reimbursable grant program will cover approved expenses to build or expand a permanent dining parklet, parkway, sidewalk cafe, or dining on a private parking/surface lot. The program will run from January 11 – June 30, 2023.
